Understanding UTC, IST, and Time Zone Offsets

Every time zone in the world is measured as an offset from UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) — for example, India Standard Time is UTC+5:30, while New York is UTC-5 in winter and UTC-4 in summer. This clock is set to IST because that's where TimeWatch Live is based, and the country search above lets you compare any city's local time and offset against it directly.

The search pulls live weather and sunrise/sunset data via the OpenWeather API, and location data via REST Countries, so you can see a city's current conditions alongside its time difference from Mumbai in one place.

Why Some Time Zones Shift and Others Don't

Countries like the UK and the US shift their clocks for Daylight Saving Time, which is why London and New York's UTC offsets change twice a year. India, Japan, and the UAE don't observe DST at all, so IST, JST, and GST stay at fixed offsets year-round — one less thing to recalculate when scheduling with those regions.

If you're coordinating across time zones regularly, our London, New York, Tokyo, and Dubai pages each break down business-hours overlap with the other major hubs.
